2020 Kia Soul vs 2019 Nissan Kicks

2020 Kia Soul Quakertown PA

Kia put its designers to work this year for two 2020 models, the Telluride and the Soul. The Soul maintains its distinct design, but this year, it's roomier with the addition of some interesting options. The Kia Soul has always been musically inspired and fun. Its theme blends a certain futuristic appearance with a young and innovative character.

Our competitor, the Nissan Kick, is reported as a one-of-a-kind crossover. It’s also said the Kick has a dynamic styling and quick performance too! However, we disagree because the stats report something entirely different. Like the Kia Soul, the Kick is produced with features the younger crowd is attracted to. Below is a short list of options Kia improved upon.

Increased Performance

  • Soul’s 2.0L engine provides more horsepower at 147 hp compared to the Kicks’ only available engine, which provides 125 hp.

Increased Style

  • Soul offers available speaker mood lights to increase interior energy while the Kicks does not offer a similar option for customization.
  • Soul offers an available power sunroof while one is not available with the Kicks.

Available Luxury

  • Soul’s available heated steering wheel is not matched on the Kicks.
  • Soul’s available 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support beats the Kicks’ 6-way manual driver’s seat.

Infotainment Telematics System

  • Soul’s GT-Line 1.6T trim has a Head-Up Display (HUD); Kicks does not offer this.
  • Soul drivers and front passengers can enjoy available wireless phone charging, which is not available in the Kicks.

Kia also installed in the Soul a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support. The Soul’s base-level seats are as comfortable but have manual controls and no lumbar support. The Kia seats knock the Kicks’ 6-way manual driver’s seat outta-the-park. Drivers who reported sitting in Kia’s seats for hours said they never had discomfort. On the other hand, Nissan installs short-based narrow seat bottoms that lack any thigh and upper-back support. Very low side bolstering makes the rear bench seat flat and hard.

Most small SUV’s cannot compare to the 2020 Kia Soul, it has one of the largest cargo spaces available for the class. Also, in the front, the Soul offers front-seat passengers with a number of compartments to hold items. However, the Kicks' cargo space is 25.3 cubic feet, which is higher than average for its class. In both cars, you can fold the rear seatbacks to open up more space.

Kia included a 2.0L engine in the Soul with an output of 147 hp. The Soul offers more horsepower in its base trim than the Kicks’ only engine option, which provides 125 hp. The Soul’s acceleration from a dead stop is nothing less than exciting. You don’t need a heavy foot to get this car moving off the line. Another plus is when driving at low speeds, the Soul can channel that power for passing. However, when driving at highway speeds, it may take a little planning to pass because the car is not designed for top end power. But even on the highway, the Soul feels more powerful than the Nissan Kick.

EPA estimates for the 2020 Soul averages 27 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The Nissan Kick estimates are higher at 31 mpg city, 36 highway, and 33 combined. The smaller Kick engine saves on fuel, but the lower horsepower doesn’t fair well in everyday driving because you may find yourself driving harder to keep up with traffic.
