Hot Off The Kia Press: The Kia HabaNiro Concept Car!

Spicy New Vision for the Future of Electric Vehicles

Imagined, and created at Kia’s California design studio, a versatile and inventive automobile creates a whole new category of mobility – “The Everything Car” or ECEV

Bold, imaginative design and high-tech features combine to present the future of automotive interaction

NEW YORK, April 17, 2019 — Kia Motors America (KMA) unveiled its vision of the future of electric vehicles and it’s hot.  And spicy. The Kia HabaNiro concept is a fully-electric, all-wheel drive, four-seat wonder car with an All-Electric Range (AER) of more than 300 miles, level-five autonomous mode, butterfly wing doors and more advanced tech than what helped land men on the moon. But this is no fanciful supercar that will likely never be built, but a prescient look into the future of mobility where automobiles will seamlessly integrate design, capability, usefulness, and creativity.

gateway kia quakertown pa habaniro concept

“We wanted this concept to be comfortable navigating city streets, carving turns on a coastal road and off-roading with confidence to remote wilderness adventures,” said Tom Kearns, vice president of design for Kia Design Center America (KDCA). “We imagined a car for everyone and nearly everything. Then, when we saw the finished product, we were blown away by the imagination of the HabaNiro’s creators and its laboratory of technology and we want it in our driveway. Today.” With its rugged 20-inch wheels, short overhangs and big haunches, the HabaNiro exudes coiled muscularity and capability, whether you’re on a grocery run, en route to a meeting or in search of a remote fishing hole.

gateway kia quakertown pa habaniro concept

“We couldn’t be more proud of our design center,” says Michael Cole, KMA chief operating officer, and executive vice president. “The HabaNiro is a genius work of skill and imagination. Not only does its beautiful design incorporate the needs of future mobility, but its engineering and technology anticipate the way people will want to move in the near future.”

A Whole New Category of Vehicle

The HabaNiro is a compact crossover utility vehicle only in terms of existing industry category language. But the HabaNiro can’t be so easily defined. It’s essentially an all-electric Everything Car or ECEV – commuter, crossover, sport utility, state-of-the-art technology workroom, and adventure vehicle.

gateway kia quakertown pa habaniro concept

An Exterior to Move You

The HabaNiro design is defined by the energetic interplay between the protective metallic grey cladding that encompasses the front wheels and extends onto the body sides and the bright “Lava Red” aero panel that defines the C-pillar and extends up and over the roof. These two elements create vibrant energy and a forward-leaning posture that suggests the HabaNiro is ready to launch. This latent forward energy is reinforced by the single elegant character line that wraps around the front end, extends through the shoulder, and ends dynamically pointed at the rear wheels.

gateway kia quakertown pa habaniro concept

The HabaNiro grille resembles a shark’s snout, complete with a slit-like gap full of gloss black aluminum “teeth” similar to the cooling blades found on high-end electronic equipment. The EV chassis architecture allowed the wheels to be pushed to the corners, giving the HabaNiro its wide and confident stance.

gateway kia quakertown pa habaniro concept

Satin aluminum skid plates, milled billet aluminum tow hooks, anodized Lava Red aluminum accents, and the embossed HabaNiro name complement the upscale look while suggesting the vehicle’s adventure-ready attitude. Perhaps most importantly, the heartbeat pulse of the daytime running lights announces the HabaNiro’s animated energy – “I’m alive.”

An Interior to Transport You and an Array of High-Tech Features

The scissor-like opening of the HabaNiro’s four butterfly-wing doors hints at its future-forward interior design. The Lava Red interior suggests passion and vibrancy. Modern and airy, the interior is accented by the bouclé fabric-trimmed front seats that appear to float within the spacious cabin. Contributing to the interior’s clean and modern appearance is the absence of rectangular screens and traditional control knobs and buttons. Instead, the HabaNiro features a full-width front windshield Heads-Up Display (HUD) system controlled by a concave acrylic instrument panel that is a large interactive touchpad display with Sensory Light Feedback (SLF). Technical Option Sharing System (TOSS) allows users to swipe and move vehicle options across the HUD screen as though moving chess pieces.

HabaNiro’s occupants are kept comfortable by a slim Perimeter Ventilation System (PVS) that quietly and evenly blows a curtain of air throughout the cabin. A soft ambient glow shines through the bold geometrically-patterned floor, creating a movement that reflects onto surfaces within the cabin. The Lighting Color Effect (LCE) can be dimmed or brightened, and the hue can be modified to impact the mood of the interior environment.

gateway kia quakertown pa habaniro concept

When HabaNiro’s part-time level-five autonomous driving system is engaged the steering wheel and instrument panel retracts forward to provide more room for the front occupants. Media or other entertainment, such as a movie for a long highway haul, can be displayed on the full-width HUD video system.

Kia’s new Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving

HabaNiro features Kia’s new Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving (R.E.A.D.) system introduced earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show. R.E.A.D. can optimize and personalize a vehicle cabin space by analyzing a driver’s emotional state in real-time through artificial intelligence-based bio-signal recognition technology. The technology monitors the driver’s emotional state and tailors the interior environment according to its assessment – potentially altering conditions relating to the human senses within the cabin and in turn creating a more pleasurable and safer driving experience.

gateway kia quakertown pa habaniro concept

R.E.A.D. also enables the HabaNiro’s Eye Tracking System (ETS) with 180° rear-view video display. The system uses AI-based emotional intelligence to monitor when the driver looks up to the top of the windshield where conventional rearview mirrors are traditionally located. The AI immediately senses the driver’s need to see behind the vehicle and instantly activates the 180° rear-view video display.

There are no immediate plans to utilize AI to sense when the driver is hungry and then direct to the nearest drive-through where an order will be waiting, but the technology may someday evolve to make just such a task possible. AI and automation shouldn’t take the joy out of driving, as some auto lovers fear, but should enhance it – anticipating needs so we can concentrate on the driving experience.

gateway kia quakertown pa habaniro concept

Into the Future

Some will assume the HabaNiro concept will never be built, but we don’t advise betting the farm on it. In the past 18 months, Kia launched two vehicles, the Stinger and the Telluride. They were from concepts that fully captured the public’s imagination. The HabaNiro’s butterfly doors? Maybe not today, but the future is looking exciting. Kia is ready to lead the automotive industry into this spicy world of possibility.

Quakertown Kia Service Tips: Media Device Ports

Thursday, July 18th, 2019

In this article, our Quakertown PA Kia Service specialists describe how to use and where Media Device Ports are located. We at Gateway Kia of Quakertown understand how using new features and technologies can be terrifying and sometimes confusing. Accordingly, Kia dealers strive to educate customers regardless of where the vehicle was purchased. Please be sure to ask your Kia representative to point out where the Media Device Ports are located in your vehicle during your perfect Kia delivery.

During delivery of your Kia vehicle, ask your sales or service representative to show you the location and functionality of USB, 12 Volt, and Aux device media/charging ports.

Location of Media Device Ports

It is important to be knowledgeable about the location of media device ports in your model. Examples of some common locations are inside the center console, behind the center console, and under the infotainment system stack.

gateway kia quakertown service tips media device ports

The location and number of ports may vary by model and trim option. For example, the Sedona is equipped with additional media device ports located in the 3rd-row cargo area on higher trims.

USB Ports and Use of Cables

Many 2019 and later model year Kia vehicles contain two different kinds of USB ports; one for playing music from a compatible media device and the other for charging compatible devices (signified by a charging icon).

gateway kia quakertown service tips media device ports

NOTE: Devices will only be charged when the vehicle is in ACC/ON/Start position.

We stress you use a USB charging cable that is certified by the device manufacturer. Use of an aftermarket cable is not recommended, as it may impact functionality and charging.

Aux Port

Most Kia models also have an aux (Auxillary) port which can be used to connect audio devices with an aux cable (3.5 mm).

NOTE: The Niro EV and K900 do not have an AUX port.

Quakertown Kia Service Tips: Intelligent Variable Transmission

Saturday, June 22nd, 2019
gateway kia of quakertown pa intelligent variable transmission

With the recent release of the all-new third generation Forte, it is essential that you are familiar with the new Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT), which is another successful first for the Kia brand. Look for the IVT feature in other soon to be released Kia models.

In contrast to the widely adapted Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) used in many of today’s vehicles, Kia’s IVT is a more sophisticated system that will adjust shift feel according to driver input. At times, shifting may be seamless, and you may not experience a significant RPM drop or ‘shift shock’ as in a traditional automatic transmission, however when more acceleration is needed, the transmission will provide a conventional shift feel.

Please be sure to ask your Gateway Kia of Quakertown sales or service specialist about this new transmission, and how to change the vehicle’s driving dynamics via the Drive Mode feature described below.

The Intelligent Variable Transmission Modes

SMART, NORMAL, and SPORT drive modes (A) may be changed according to the driver’s preference or road conditions. To cycle through drive modes, press the DRIVE MODE button (B).

gateway kia of quakertown pa intelligent variable transmission

DRIVE MODE FEATURE

  • NORMAL-Mode: The system’s default mode is NORMAL mode and is not displayed on the instrument cluster.
  • SPORT-Mode: The SPORT indicator will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The transmission shift points and steering feel will be more aggressive.
  • SMART-Mode: When the SMART mode is activated, the system automatically selects the drive mode best suited to the current driving system (economic, average, aggressive). A SMART indicator will illuminate on the instrument cluster.

Our Gateway Kia of Quakertown PA service experts recommends testing the Intelligent Variable Transmission while at the dealership. The trill of this new transmission experience will excite you and anyone riding with you.

As with all features, Kia recommends you test your vehicle features with a Gateway Kia of Quakertown PA sales representative. Quakertown Kia Service Tips: Shift Before Ready

Friday, June 21st, 2019
gateway quakertown kia service tips shift before ready

If you have a Hybrid (HEV) or Electric vehicle (EV) and never heard of “Shift Before Ready,” then you should read this service tip. To start an HEV or EV vehicle, you must follow a different sequence than that is a traditional gas vehicle?

GAS VEHICLE: To start the vehicle, you must have the shifter in the Park (P) position. Generally, you start the engine and then shift the vehicle into Reverse, Neutral, or Drive.

In comparison…

HYBRID or EV: To start the vehicle, you must have the shifter in the Park (P) position and wait for the computer to show “READY.” After the system is ready, then you can shift into Reverse, Neutral, or Drive. However, you happen to shift before the system shows “READY,” then the vehicle will not start.

Watch the video for a demonstration of the system readiness check and how the vehicle must be in the “READY” mode before being shifted out of “PARK.”

VIDEO

The Shift Before Ready signals

Again, if the vehicle is shifted out of Park (P) before being “READY,” it is termed as “Shift before Ready.”

If “Shift Before Ready” occurs, the Green “READY” symbol (A) will not be illuminated. The vehicle will need to be shifted back into the Park (P) position and then restarted (ignition cycled).

Our Gateway Kia of Quakertown PA service experts recommends testing the Shift Before Ready sequence. The experience will add to your knowledge about the feature and your vehicle.

Quakertown Kia Service Tips: Apple iPhone iOS 12 Versions

Monday, April 22nd, 2019
gateway kia quakertown apple ios 12 cover

October 2018, Apple released its new iOS 12 version. Since then, Kia published positive compatibility reports with its UVO System. Kia’s policy on compatibility with personal devices should be a model for other manufacturers. One reason for their compatibility control is that approximately 40% of U.S. smartphone customers use Apple iPhones. The 40% market share is a good reason for Gateway Kia Quakertown Sales and Service staff to be well-informed about Apple technologies, but also, Android technologies too.

Gateway Kia staff realize there are customers love technology, and those customers love to tinker. To accommodate our do-it-yourself customers, we offer these service articles and tips. In this article, our highly qualified service team discuss the iOS 12 version and newly unlocked benefits. You’ll see these benefits in Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth functionality when your iPhone is connected to your Kia vehicle.

Apple iPhone iOS 12 and Apple CarPlay

If your device has iOS 12 installed, then you’re able to use Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze in Apple CarPlay in ways you weren’t able before.

To access these new features, please check the following:

  • your iPhone is up to date with iOS 12 or later
  • Google Maps or Waze apps are updated to the latest version. Apple Maps is automatically updated with iOS 12.

When you start your vehicle and access the Apple CarPlay screen you should see the same app icons as on your iPhone. If not, you need to configure the Apple CarPlay home screen by doing the following:

  • Open the Settings menu on the iPhone
  • Select General → CarPlay → “vehicle”

With the update, you can touch and hold any icon on the screen, then drag to the desired location. Just like on your iPhone!

gateway kia quakertown apple ios 12 maps

One of the most important features is Voice Command. Remember, pressing the Voice Recognition button only activates Siri. Siri only works with Apple Maps and does not work with Google Maps or Waze. If you wish to use these third-party apps, then while in Apple CarPlay you need to press the Voice Recognition icon. In order to use Voice Recognition on Google Maps and Waze, press the on-screen Microphone button.

gateway kia quakertown apple ios 12 maps

Bluetooth

When you first updated to iOS 12, you may have noticed the Bluetooth icon disappeared from the top of your phone screen. Bluetooth may be active and connected, it’s just that the icon is no longer used to confirm Bluetooth status. If you wish to confirm Bluetooth connection on the iPhone, do the following:

Select Settings → Bluetooth → locate the vehicle name under “My Devices” and confirm the connection status.

In some situations, customers experienced Bluetooth connectivity concerns after updating to iOS 12.0 and later versions. This issue happens because sometimes the mobile device retains an old connection. Best advice for improving Bluetooth connectivity is as follows:

  • On the phone, toggle Bluetooth off then back on
  • Restart the iPhone
  • Delete the iPhone from the UVO or Base audio system and the car system from the phone and perform a fresh pairing
  • Reset the head unit by pressing the reset button with a paperclip or pen

Gateway Kia Quakertown PA service specialists always suggest updating to the latest released iOS version on your device. The latest version contains connectivity and compatibility improvements for many third-party app and devices.

As with all features, Kia advises you spend time in your vehicle with a Gateway Kia Quakertown PA sales representative. Your Quakertown representative is qualified to help you navigate new features with devices using Apple iPhone iOS 12. Gateway Kia Quakertown PA follows a “perfect delivery process” to ensure you receive an excellent customer experience.

Quakertown Kia Service Tips: Kia Voice Recognition

Sunday, April 21st, 2019
kia uvo voice recognition gateway quakertown pa

You just took delivery of a vehicle and notice it has the Kia Voice Recognition feature. Your ability to use this feature and give the voice recognition system proper commands is important to Kia. It’s important because your safety comes first. And, even though Pennsylvania bans only texting and wearing headphones while driving, Kia wants both your hands on the wheel. Just another reason why Gateway Kia Quakertown Sales and Service staff spend the time necessary to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of voice recognition.

Starting Kia Voice Recognition

Here are the main points for improving your understanding of onboard voice recognition:

  • Pressing the “Talk” or “Voice” button on the steering wheel and stating the command “HELP” will produce a list of preset commands.

Ask your Gateway Kia Quakertown Sales and Service specialist to review the voice recognition visor cards. After, follow this very important checklist:

  • Check the most often called contacts on your phone.
  • Check that full names are used instead of one-word names such as “Mom” or “Dad”.
  • Do not use special characters or emojis for contact names.
  • If you own a 2017/2018 MY Sedona or Soul with Standard Audio, voice recognition capability is only available when an iPhone is paired and connected through Siri (Note: Non-iPhones can still be paired and connected through Bluetooth).

  • 2018 MY Rio’s with Standard Audio does not have voice recognition capability.
  • When your vehicle is equipped with CarPlay/Android Auto, this technology produces an enhanced voice recognition experience.
  • Don’t forget, ask our staff for the voice recognition takeaway cards, They are in the Delivery First display stand. These cards offer helpful tips to improve voice recognition performance in vehicles with Kia onboard voice recognition.
    • Lastly, you can use your Smartphone to scan the QR code on the display stand. This code will link you to a video showing how to operate the voice recognition system.

Gateway Kia Quakertown PA service specialists always suggest updating to the latest released iOS version on your device. The latest version contains connectivity and compatibility improvements for most third-party app and devices.

As with all features, Kia recommends you spend time in your vehicle with a Gateway Kia Quakertown PA sales representative. Your Quakertown representative is trained to help you operate new features using UVO and Voice Recognition. Gateway Kia Quakertown PA follows a “perfect delivery process” to ensure you receive an excellent customer experience.

Quakertown Kia Service Tips: Wireless Smartphone Charging

Saturday, March 30th, 2019
gateway kia quakertown pa wireless charging

Wireless smartphone charging is a technology many smartphones users enjoy. The reason? Mainly the elimination of messy charging wires criss crossing over desks, or even over your dash and controls while in a vehicle. Although customers desire this technology, many misunderstand the basic operation, which may affect customer satisfaction.

Qi wireless smartphone charging

Kia uses Qi wireless charging, which is an open (public) universal standard for wireless charging. It was created by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). Qi (pronounced “k-EE” but without a sharp sounding K) is an open interface standard that defines wireless power transfer between two devices over a distance. The system normally uses a charging pad and a compatible device (in this case a phone), which is placed on top of the pad.

A compatible phone or case is required

Kia stresses that a Qi compatible smartphone or compatible phone case is necessary. A compatible phone case is used with phones not designed for wireless charging. Examples of phones that are Qi compatible, that don’t need a Qi compatible case or accessory, include Apple iPhone 8 or later, and Samsung S7, S8, and S9 devices.

Steps for using Wireless Smartphone Charging include:

  1. Place the phone on the center of the charging pad.
  2. Ensure the vehicle is “on” and the doors are closed for wireless charging to be available.
  3. The indicator near the vehicle charger illuminates “amber” when the phone is charging.
  4. Depending on the phone used, you may see a “green” indicator once charging is complete. Note: The indicator changing to “green” when fully charged is dependent upon the phone used. In some cases, the indicator may stay amber even when fully charged.
  5. Some phones will not charge wirelessly when connected to the USB.
  6. Phone case thickness can impact the charge rate.
  7. Avoid placing coins, credit cards, paper clips, pens, jewelry, and other objects on the charging pad while charging

If you have a compatible smartphone, try the Wireless Smartphone Charging for yourself!

As with all features, Kia recommends you sit in your vehicle with a Gateway Kia Quakertown PA sales or service specialist. Kia specialists are trained to support you while navigating features such as theWireless Smartphone Charging. Entering an address or destination in navigation while driving

Depending on the model vehicle and phone, you may be able to give voice commands for entering a destination. Before diving into your device or UVO settings, we suggest you first press the voice recognition button on the steering wheel.
