Redesigned Urban Runabout Achieves Top Safety Ratings
- Soul’s optional Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist systems earned a “Superior” rating in testing
- Recent accolade increases the total number of Kia models included in the 2019 IIHS Safety Awards to 11
IRVINE, Calif., July 2, 2019 — The completely redesigned 2020 Kia Soul has earned Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The TSP+ designation was awarded to Soul models equipped with optional Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist1 systems and LED headlights2. On the heels of the Stinger’s recent TSP+ rating, the Soul’s new accolade increases the total number of Kia vehicles with 2019 Top Safety Pick3 or Top Safety Pick Plus4 ratings to 11 when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
“Sales have shown that the newly designed Soul is hitting all the right marks with car shoppers,” said Michael Cole, chief operating officer, and EVP, Kia Motors America (KMA). “The Soul’s unmatched style, driving refinement, and invigorating technology are key factors that have drawn consumers to Kia’s urban car, and this latest safety award is yet another reason the Soul should be considered a top contender in the compact car segment.”
2019 Top Safety Pick
To qualify for a 2019 TSP+ rating, a vehicle must earn “Good” ratings in six crashworthiness tests – driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint – as well as an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating for front crash prevention and a “Good” headlight rating. The Soul earned “Good” ratings for all six crashworthiness tests, and a “Superior” rating for the optional front crash prevention systems, which helped it avoid collisions in the IIHS’s 12-mph and 25-mph track tests. The “Good” rating for the headlights applies to LED projector headlights only.
For 2020, the Soul continues to transcend unmatched style, peppy performance, thrilling technology, and urban practicality. With a versatile lineup that includes the LX, S, X-line, GT-Line, EX, GT Turbo, and Soul EV, there’s truly a Soul for everyone.

With the recent release of the all-new third generation Forte, it is essential that you are familiar with the new Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT), which is another successful first for the Kia brand. Look for the IVT feature in other soon to be released Kia models.
In contrast to the widely adapted Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) used in many of today’s vehicles, Kia’s IVT is a more sophisticated system that will adjust shift feel according to driver input. At times, shifting may be seamless, and you may not experience a significant RPM drop or ‘shift shock’ as in a traditional automatic transmission, however when more acceleration is needed, the transmission will provide a conventional shift feel.
Please be sure to ask your Gateway Kia of Quakertown sales or service specialist about this new transmission, and how to change the vehicle’s driving dynamics via the Drive Mode feature described below.
The Intelligent Variable Transmission Modes
SMART, NORMAL, and SPORT drive modes (A) may be changed according to the driver’s preference or road conditions. To cycle through drive modes, press the DRIVE MODE button (B).
DRIVE MODE FEATURE
- NORMAL-Mode: The system’s default mode is NORMAL mode and is not displayed on the instrument cluster.
- SPORT-Mode: The SPORT indicator will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The transmission shift points and steering feel will be more aggressive.
- SMART-Mode: When the SMART mode is activated, the system automatically selects the drive mode best suited to the current driving system (economic, average, aggressive). A SMART indicator will illuminate on the instrument cluster.

If you have a Hybrid (HEV) or Electric vehicle (EV) and never heard of “Shift Before Ready,” then you should read this service tip. To start an HEV or EV vehicle, you must follow a different sequence than that is a traditional gas vehicle?
GAS VEHICLE: To start the vehicle, you must have the shifter in the Park (P) position. Generally, you start the engine and then shift the vehicle into Reverse, Neutral, or Drive.
HYBRID or EV: To start the vehicle, you must have the shifter in the Park (P) position and wait for the computer to show “READY.” After the system is ready, then you can shift into Reverse, Neutral, or Drive. However, you happen to shift before the system shows “READY,” then the vehicle will not start.
Watch the video for a demonstration of the system readiness check and how the vehicle must be in the “READY” mode before being shifted out of “PARK.”
The Shift Before Ready signals
Again, if the vehicle is shifted out of Park (P) before being “READY,” it is termed as “Shift before Ready.”
If “Shift Before Ready” occurs, the Green “READY” symbol (A) will not be illuminated. The vehicle will need to be shifted back into the Park (P) position and then restarted (ignition cycled).
Our Gateway Kia of Quakertown PA service experts recommends testing the Shift Before Ready sequence. The experience will add to your knowledge about the feature and your vehicle.
