Wireless smartphone charging is a technology many smartphones users enjoy. The reason? Mainly the elimination of messy charging wires criss crossing over desks, or even over your dash and controls while in a vehicle. Although customers desire this technology, many misunderstand the basic operation, which may affect customer satisfaction.
Qi wireless smartphone charging
Kia uses Qi wireless charging, which is an open (public) universal standard for wireless charging. It was created by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). Qi (pronounced “k-EE” but without a sharp sounding K) is an open interface standard that defines wireless power transfer between two devices over a distance. The system normally uses a charging pad and a compatible device (in this case a phone), which is placed on top of the pad.
A compatible phone or case is required
Kia stresses that a Qi compatible smartphone or compatible phone case is necessary. A compatible phone case is used with phones not designed for wireless charging. Examples of phones that are Qi compatible, that don’t need a Qi compatible case or accessory, include Apple iPhone 8 or later, and Samsung S7, S8, and S9 devices.
Steps for using Wireless Smartphone Charging include:
- Place the phone on the center of the charging pad.
- Ensure the vehicle is “on” and the doors are closed for wireless charging to be available.
- The indicator near the vehicle charger illuminates “amber” when the phone is charging.
- Depending on the phone used, you may see a “green” indicator once charging is complete. Note: The indicator changing to “green” when fully charged is dependent upon the phone used. In some cases, the indicator may stay amber even when fully charged.
- Some phones will not charge wirelessly when connected to the USB.
- Phone case thickness can impact the charge rate.
- Avoid placing coins, credit cards, paper clips, pens, jewelry, and other objects on the charging pad while charging
If you have a compatible smartphone, try the Wireless Smartphone Charging for yourself!

Pair your Bluetooth smartphone(s).
Ensure your contacts download successfully.
Starting the pairing process is easy. First, press the green or white “Call” button on the steering wheel or the PHONE hard key on the radio/navigation.
From your phone, turn Bluetooth on and search and select your vehicle’s name on the phone. Choose the one that matches the name on the radio/navigation screen (Kia Motors).
Next, follow the instructions on the phone to confirm the passkey displayed and select “OK” or “Pair” on the phone to complete the pairing process.
Be sure to allow phonebook download or contact sync on the phone and accept all requests for future auto-connection.
If more specific instructions are needed to pair and connect additional phones, then please reference the vehicle’s user manual.
Don’t be concerned if a problem occurs with Bluetooth, there is a simple fix. Delete your phone name from the Kia onboard screen and also delete your Kia vehicle name from your phone’s Bluetooth list. Then, turn your phone off and back on and begin the pairing process from the start. This will establish a new connection.

Using the new text messaging feature
If you own a 2019 Optima, Optima Plug-In Hybrid, Niro EV, or K900, you will be able to send and receive text messages directly through your vehicle with a smartphone connected via Bluetooth. You must have an active UVO subscription in order for this feature to function.
Note: The texting feature is device dependent; users with Android smartphones full access while iPhone users only have “Read” access.
Keep in mind that Bluetooth functionality and compatibility depends on your phone and its operating system version. We recommended you keep your phone updated with the latest released operating system version. This helps both Kia and phone manufacturers continue to correct issues and add new features.

Connecting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
To make the connection between your phone and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you’ll need to follow the required steps. We’ve included videos below to guide you through the process. Ask your Kia Quakertown PA sales or service representative if your vehicle supports this feature.
Entering an address or destination in navigation while driving
Depending on the model vehicle and phone, you may be able to give voice commands for entering a destination. Before diving into your device or UVO settings, we suggest you first press the voice recognition button on the steering wheel. This will allow you to use voice commands to enter a destination when in motion. This applies when using the onboard navigation system, Apple CarPlay with Apple maps, Android Auto with Google Maps, or when using Waze.
We stress enabling and using your hands-free voice command feature with navigation. If you don’t have voice recognition, we advise pulling over and stopping in a safe area and manually input the information.
There are a few exceptions. If the steering-wheel voice recognition button does not work with your desired mobile app, then use the in-app microphone button.
For additional instructions on setting up your navigation system, watch UVO Link/UVO Eco/UVO eServices with Navigation (AVN 5.0) for all models except for K900 and Rio.

Intro to UVO Play
In this article, we’re reviewing Kia’s newest base audio platform named UVO Play, which was first introduced in the 2019 Kia Sorento. The UVO Play may resemble other Kia installed infotainment systems in its vehicles, however, the functionality between these systems is quite different.
Some of the functionality differences between them include:
Android Auto / Apple CarPlay
The UVO Play is the first base audio unit to support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Kia’s UVO Play system supports Voice Recognition using an iPhone connected via Bluetooth. With a long button press (1 second or more) of the voice-button, you are able to use Siri Eyes Free. Siri Eyes Free is an extension of Apple’s Siri functionality. It enables voice control of an iOS mobile device and activated once linked to a car’s in-dash audio system. The voice recognition is provided through your mobile device and not installed in the Kia system. In other words, voice recognition is fully dependent on your mobile device.
The UVO Play also supports Voice Recognition through an iPhone or Android device connected via USB when connected through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Please note, SiriusXM is not a feature in this system. You may still listen to AM and FM frequency bands. Also, compatible music apps are available when downloaded to your mobile phone and used in conjunction with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Kia recommends you sit in your vehicle with a Gateway Kia Quakertown PA Sales or Service specialist and explore the new UVO Play audio unit for yourself. In doing so, you will have guidance navigating the various features and provided a high-quality customer experience during Gateway Kia Quakertown PA perfect delivery process.
